NICHOLSON, Edward Williams Byron (1849-1912)
CL London Institution 1873; CL Bodleian Library 1882-1912
The highly successful manager of a small library may yet mismanage a large one. Nicholson's outstanding achievements at the London Institution included not only the rehabilitation of a near-moribund library but also the initiation of the movement to found the LA which held its inaugural meeting there in October 1877; he served as joint Honorary Secretary until 1878. His career at Bodley, by contrast, must be regarded as partial failure, due substantially to his inability, firstly to delegate competently and, secondly, to establish a satisfactory working relationship with his governing body, the Bodley Curators.
